Lesson Plan: Thought Experiment

Scenario:

Once there was an island in the middle of a great ocean. On this island, there were four groups of people. They were living on the island for so many years that none even remembered how they got there.

They could look out across the ocean and see what looked like land far away. But no one knew how to reach those far off lands. With a great deal of effort, one group of people built a huge ship and made an expedition to the nearest island. It took a week, and they found the island was deserted. The next closest island would take three years to reach, and so no one tried.

Although these four groups of people had to share that one island, they were not at peace. In fact, they were almost constantly at war. The men were dying. Children were left fatherless, and women were left widowed. Huge bombs blew up unsuspecting people. Everywhere, there was pain and suffering.

And why were they fighting? They each believed in different gods, and the leaders could not get along with anyone who believed differently. Here is what some of the leaders were saying: (Each student read one)

• “We are the chosen people of the Lord. He has given this land to us. If other people occupy it, it is our right and duty to kill them or drive them off our lands. Kill them!”
• “Unbelievers and blasphemers! They must be killed. They dare to insult our prophet! God be praised, they must be killed. If we die while killing infidels, we will go to heaven! “
• “We are the righteous people of God. God has rewarded us with great power and wealth. We must use this to bring the word of God to all the pagans. If they resist, we will kill them. It is for the good of their immortal souls!”
• “These people have invaded and looted our land when we were weak. They have destroyed our temples and built their houses of worship on top. Now we are strong again. We must thank our God and show our gratitude by rebuilding the temples. Let us destroy the unclean houses of worship and build a glorious temple!”

Children were then given various quotes to read and discuss. (See Lesson Plan Enclosed ). Then the thought experiment resumed

Okay, now back to the island.

God is looking down at his creation, and is aghast at what is being done in His name. He comes to you in a dream, and says to you “I am giving you this chance to be Me. You shall have all my powers. Go and bring peace to this island. But there is one rule you must follow. At no time may you show yourself as God to the natives.”

Having learned about how each religion views Love, what would you do to bring peace to this poor island? Activity 3: Each student/group of students speak about their plan, and how they will answer all the questions from the leaders of the groups of natives
